Christ Our Shepherd Advent Calendar 2019
Daily Advent Reflection from John Lehmann
How do you know when you are called upon to do God’s work? As lifelong Lutherans, we have heard many times that we are to do God’s work here on earth. I think we found out during our visits to provide communion to members who are not able to attend services that there are opportunities for us. We had one recipient who experienced the loss of his wife and son and no longer had any close relatives to help him with his concerns and business. We found ourselves getting more involved in assisting him since he was losing the ability to take adequate care of himself. We gradually took over paying his bills and making sure that his bank records were kept up to date so that he could maintain his residence. He had decided that he would prefer staying there. Marilyn took over the responsibility of making sure that his health concerns were taken care of and that his appointments were completed. As dementia increased, we found it necessary to have him transferred to an assisted living facility. He found that the attention and association with others was what he really wanted and was happy. His condition took a turn for the worse, though, and he recently passed away at Piedmont-Fayette ICU.
We don’t know how we became involved but feel that God was leading the way for us. We have the feeling that God was directing all of the necessary legal steps and has eased the way for us. Sometimes you just have to listen and pay attention to what He is telling you. We have to keep our hearts and minds open to be available to do what is directed to us.
