Christ Our Shepherd Advent Calendar 2019
Daily Advent Reflection from Eli Anderson
A gift to give this season:
writing an Advent devotion about “Watching for Jesus.”
When I’ve had a bad day, or am just in a bad mood, I try to count my blessings to cheer myself up. It seems cliché, but consciously reminding myself of all that I have to be grateful for always makes me feel better. As I was thinking about this Advent devotional, it struck me that “keeping watch for Jesus” is pretty similar to counting my blessings. These are both ways to actively think about the things in life that we may take for granted.
One of the biggest blessings in our lives as members of Christ Our Shepherd is our community. Every time I come to church, I am reminded of all the people who help to make COS such a great community. During the busy holiday season, this is even more important and meaningful. Sometimes, I will admit, I don’t feel enthusiastic about going to church. I want to stay in bed on Sunday and sleep in- especially on a cold winter’s morning! When I am feeling this way, I count my blessings. I remember all the members of this congregation who are also getting up, putting on their Sunday best, and coming together to worship. Many members of our congregation also give their time and energy to other church and community activities- musicians, ushers, church council, volunteer workers. I could go on and on…
This sense of community, of shared worship, is where I see Jesus at work. Our congregation is a great blessing. This Advent season, I encourage everyone to “count your blessings” by noticing how the members of your congregation allow Jesus to work through them. I hope it will make you feel as thankful and blessed as it does for me.
