Comfort
Today’s advent devotional is written by one of our new members, Debbie Brown.
“May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant.”
Psalm 119:76
At some points in our life, comfort feels distant, like something others may find but we do not.
Psalm 119:76 addresses this feeling. It doesn’t ask for a comfort that depends on life working out just right. It asks for comfort rooted in God’s unfailing love, love that doesn’t change when life does.
This verse isn’t about pretending everything is fine. Rather, it encourages that we reach for God because things aren’t. We can find comfort in God and His promise to us. It’s almost like saying, “Lord, I’m worn down. I need comfort that only You can give.” Sadly, we all hit those spots in life; moments when the world feels heavy, when loss crushes, when uncertainty is all around us. What this verse reminds us is that comfort isn’t something we earn or something God might hand out if we’re especially strong. It’s something He’s already promised. His love isn’t fragile. It isn’t unpredictable. It doesn’t run out when we are tired of trying.
When we believe that God gives a love that doesn’t fail, we’re not just soothing our emotions.
We are choosing to anchor ourselves to something immovable. God’s promise isn’t a vague idea; it’s His steady presence showing up in quiet ways: a breath of peace we didn’t expect, a moment of clarity, a reminder we’re not carrying our life alone.
If this season feels too loud or too lonely, let this verse be a gentle landing place. God’s love is your comfort—not based on your strength, but on His promise.
Lord, let Your unfailing love settle over my heart today and throughout the entire advent season. Remind me of Your nearness and steady me with Your promises. Comfort me in the places that hurt, and keep me close to You.
Amen.
