Philippians 4:4- “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.”
Several years ago my husband, children, and I went to Hilton Head. We rented bikes on a beautiful sunny day with our two little ones in tow. When we rented the bikes, we asked the owner “what should be our destination with kids?” She said “Harbortown- there is a playground, lighthouse, ice cream place, and lots of good restaurants.” To get there, we had to ride several miles on the beach. It was picturesque, but HOT with lots of bumps and turns. It also took awhile. That biking gave me time to think and reflect!
While I was biking, I thought to myself, “even though it’s SO hot, bumpy, and L-O-N-G, we have a GREAT destination to end our journey.” I knew if we rode around aimlessly, the ride wouldn’t be nearly as much fun. But because we would arrive at a wonderful destination, I didn’t focus on the length, heat or bumps. I just took in God’s glory – the sun, ocean, trees, other people, and the giggles of my children ❤
This reminded me of our Christian life/faith. Our “destiny”/“destination” is set. God’s love for us gives us that beautiful gift. Therefore, we can and should joyfully live and love along this beautiful “ride”. Of course there will be “heat” and “bumps” along the way. However, we shouldn’t focus on those things but should truly stay focused on the JOY, beauty, love, and life around us each day.
