Tradition Thursday: Twins

December 5, 2024

You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
Luke 1:31

As we approach the Advent season reflecting on how we can prepare our hearts for Christ’s birth we focus on four different characteristics: hope, joy, peace, and love.

There are many stories about the birth of Jesus. I’d like to share some birth stories that bring me hope, joy, peace, and love.

My father was born an identical twin in 1927. Very unusual at this time to have surviving twins. Needless to say they were spoiled and loved beyond measure. It was fun growing up with a dad who had an identical twin. It was a bit unnerving as a youngster to literally not know which was my father. Eventually my dad had two daughters.

Fast forward 28 years and my sister and I were expecting babies at the same time I can remember clearly the day she called me and I answered the land line and said “you’re having twins”. She laughed and said how did you know. She gave birth to girl/boy twins. My dad was thrilled. More twins. It was a joy to watch these twins grow up with my children.

Fast forward again 29 years and you guessed it the twin girl just gave birth to twin boys. What a blessing. My dad passed two years ago, but his brother is still living and he will meet these twin boys in December.

I remember years ago someone who was expecting a baby under dire circumstances said it would be ok because “everyone loves a baby.”

Let us pray,
Jesus, we celebrate your birth during this Advent season and we pray hope, joy, peace, and love can be applied to all births.
Amen
